Doctor Who

While my favorite Doctor will always be Tom Baker. I like the look of the 10th Doctor, nice suit and sneakers, classic Police Box. David Tennant today steps into the role of the tenth Time Lord. What narrative has a better way to replace actors than Doctor Who? You get tired of the character, actor gets tired of the Doctor...you off him in an episode and he 'regenerates'. Brilliant.

Google Moon

Google's map technology applied to the moon in honor of the first manned Moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969. Not only a fun adventure to our nearest neighbor, but a great marketing tool for Google Maps and Google Earth.

Shapes as Trademarks

In the UK you can't use that shape, I hold that trademark! Ha!

The possibility of registering product shapes as trade marks became a reality in the UK with the implementation of the Trade Marks Act 1994 when such shapes were specifically included within the definition of trade marks. Since the definition of trade marks was broadened in this way, there has been much debate over the issue of what exactly may be registered.

Superellipse

Not sure about all this math but these superellispes look great. From Wikipedia: A superellipse is a geometrical figure which in a cartesian coordinate system can be described as the set of all points (x, y) with where n > 0 and a and b are the radii of the oval shape. The case n = 2 yields an ordinary ellipse; increasing n beyond 2 yields the hyperellipses, which increasingly resemble rectangles; decreasing n below 2 yields hypoellipses which develop pointy corners in the x and y directions and increasingly resemble crosses.

Wheel of Lance

This week's Shape of the Week goes out to graffiti artist Futura and Nike Design who teamed up to give Lance Armstrong an extra push on the first stage of thie year's Tour de France...

The back wheel displays various icons related to Lance's lifestory. A little Eiffel Tower, a map of Texas, an “LIG” for his kids’ initials are among the symbols.

Recombinant. Process. Remix.

William Gibson writes in Wired about end of the recorded product...

We live at a peculiar juncture, one in which the record (an object) and the recombinant (a process) still, however briefly, coexist. But there seems little doubt as to the direction things are going. The recombinant is manifest in forms as diverse as Alan Moore's graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, machinima generated with game engines (Quake, Doom, Halo), the whole metastasized library of Dean Scream remixes, genre-warping fan fiction from the universes of Star Trek or Buffy or (more satisfying by far) both at once, the JarJar-less Phantom Edit (sound of an audience voting with its fingers), brand-hybrid athletic shoes, gleefully transgressive logo jumping, and products like Kubrick figures, those Japanese collectibles that slyly masquerade as soulless corporate units yet are rescued from anonymity by the application of a thoughtfully aggressive "custom" paint job.

I don't think the 'recorded product' or the 'object' is going away anytime soon, if ever. There's always an idea. But what's the source material? From which author that part of that idea originate? Product today is a product of yesterday's product. But it's always been that way.

Read more about Gibson, and more about Wired's observations on Remixing.

London

My good friend Adam was in London just last week, riding the tube in the same area as this morning's attacks. He provides some encouraging thoughts, including this one from Winston Churchill on his blog.

Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities... because it is the quality which guarantees all others.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by the attacks. May London stay strong, united and special. The BBC is providing detailed local coverage.

[Update: Wikipedia's coverage has quickly evolved over the course of the day. It's impressive to note what a online resource with multiple contributors can do to serve as a central repository for information on the fly during an important event.]

[Update: Doc Searls points us to this first-hand account of the tube bombings.]

[Update: Wired reports on the strain on wireless networks. Or did the UK shut the network down?]

Sign From Above?

I'm a big believer that the universe sends us signs.

I just had the following happen moments ago listening to Radio Paradise while daydreaming online about rain:

Some call it serendipity - I call it desperation.

Thank you, rain gods!

Rain Dance

It is 107 degrees and 8% humidity here in Tucson and I am walking a mile and a half home.

I can't wait for the summer rains to get here...

Corporate humanity

Just another reason why I'm switching to Mac...

Jobs calls family of stabbing victim
Apple CEO offers condolences 'from his heart' to family of teen killed last week over iPod.

Uniform Design

The power of design to excite, educate and influence employees and customers makes the difference in the way they experience the brand. Delta recently hired designer Kate Spade to dress its flight crew.
And as SvN points out, McDonalds recently hired Tommy Hilfiger, P Diddy and Russell Simmons to redesign the employee uniforms.

Suns Basketball

Any game played with a sphere on a rectangle makes us happy, but basketball is pretty special. Growing up watching Lute Olson work his magic year after year in Tucson, living and breathing Suns basketball since the early 80's - hoops is the sport of choice at Mister Shape.

This summer has been especially exciting. After watching the Suns come within a few defensive stops in each of the games against the NBA Champion Spurs..playing without Joe Johnson, the Suns came within possesions of advancing. Now the Suns reload with defensive minded players who still pack an offensive punch. Welcome to the desert Kurt and Raja, it's time to get a ring.
